[-lan], Kristian Olaf Bernhard, norwegischer Physiker, * Christiania (heute Oslo) 13. 12. 1867, ✝ Tokio 15. 6. 1917; seit 1898 Professor in Kristiania; befasste sich v. a. mit der kosmischen Physik und dem Erdmagnetfeld; erkannte nach Modellversuchen mit Kathodenstrahlen (1904) als Ursache des Polarlichts das Eindringen von magnetisch zu den Polen hin abgelenkten geladenen Teilchen in die obere Atmosphäre. Birkeland entwickelte außerdem 1903 ein Verfahren, den atmosphärischen Stickstoff im elektrischen Lichtbogen an Luftsauerstoff zu binden (»Luftverbrennungsverfahren nach Birkeland-Eyde«), das die erste großtechnische Salpetersäuresynthese ermöglichte.
